How I Decide Foundation, an educational nonprofit focused on youth decision-making, is running GM Genius, a national college scholarship competition and learning app based on fantasy football for the 2018 NFL season.
Leveraging the tremendous popularity of fantasy football among high school and college students, the competition includes animated videos that teach key decision-making and critical thinking concepts.
Students ages 13 to 22 are eligible to participate and can compete to win more than $25,000 in college scholarships and other prizes.
GM Genius ran a very successful first season in 2017 with nearly 1,000 students participating from all 50 states and three Canadian provinces, over $25,000 in college scholarships and other prizes awarded, and data indicating strong student engagement and impact. In addition, GM Genius garnered national media attention and won the Rookie of the Year Award from the Fantasy Sports Trade Association (FSTA).
GM Genius is building on last year’s success in several ways and expects significant growth in year two. Not only are college students now eligible to participate, but there are also several new prizes, an optional essay competition at the end of the competition, and a partnership with a professor to measure the educational impact of the program.
“Good decision-making requires practicing particular skills, like analyzing information and probabilistic thinking,” said Annie Duke, author of the national best seller, Thinking in Bets, and co-founder of How I Decide. “Students need environments that nurture their ability to practice these skills and receive feedback on their performance. GM Genius is designed to give them that opportunity.”
