Bloomberg Square Mile Relay continued their community program, The Extra Mile, in San Francisco last week in partnership with sport-for-development organization America Scores. Leading up to the race night on August 3, volunteers participated in a “Community Day”, which took place at Paul Revere Elementary School in the heart of San Francisco.
The Extra Mile addresses a unique social challenge in each city, giving runners and spectators alike the opportunity to make a meaningful and actionable difference to healthcare, education, arts or the environment of their communities, all through using the power of sport.
In San Francisco, The Extra Mile teamed up with sport-for-development organization America Scores to harness the power of sport to advance quality education initiatives across the Bay Area.
The Community Day saw Bloomberg Square Mile Relay volunteers lead local school children in sports education programming focused on the theme of “teamwork.” Students wrote poems, played soccer games, and learned about healthy eating. At the end of the day, students picked out a book to take home with them.
The philanthropic partnership will continue throughout the year, as The Extra Mile will support America SCORES programs that will provide young people with positive learning and interactive opportunities.
America SCORES is an afterschool program providing the triple play of poetry, soccer, and service learning programs to Bay Area public schools. Since 2001, SCORES has been delivering joyful learning opportunities to children, giving students the support, confidence, and vision to meet new challenges and chart their own futures.
This marks the second year that San Francisco will host a Bloomberg Square Mile Relay series event. Currently operating in 11 cities across the globe, the race offers a unique platform where companies can network, bond and collaborate outside their working environment through a relay race.
After a successful first year, the Square Mile team decided to broaden the scope of their program to give back to the communities where they operate. Sydney was the first city to host the Extra Mile, followed shortly by New York and Tokyo, but there are plans to expand across all host cities.
